Every Friday afternoon, Muslims around the world stop what they are doing and gather together for prayer. This gathering is called Jummah.
At Warragul Mosque, Jummah takes place every Friday at 1:30 PM at 72 Victoria Street, Warragul VIC 3820.
What Does "Jummah" Mean?
The word Jummah (Arabic: جمعة) means "gathering" or "congregation." It refers both to Friday as a day and to the Friday prayer itself. In Islam, Friday is considered the most blessed day of the week, and the Quran dedicates a full chapter to it, Surah Al-Jumu'ah.
Attending Jummah prayer is obligatory for adult Muslim men. For women, it is encouraged but not required.
What Happens at Jummah?
A standard Jummah service runs for about 45 to 60 minutes and has two main parts.
The Khutbah (Sermon)
First comes the khutbah, delivered by the imam from the minbar (pulpit). The sermon typically covers a topic from Islamic teachings and often connects to current community life. It finishes with a supplication for the congregation and the wider world.
At Warragul Mosque, the khutbah is delivered in English, so it is accessible to everyone in the room.
The Prayer
After the khutbah, the congregation lines up and prays two units (rak'ahs) together, led by the imam. This replaces the regular Dhuhr (midday) prayer for those attending.
Who Attends at Warragul?
Our Friday congregation includes men, women, and children from across Baw Baw Shire, as well as visitors and non-Muslim observers. Everyone is welcome. You will not be asked to participate in the prayer if you are there as a visitor.
What Should I Wear?
For Muslim attendees, Friday is a day to dress cleanly and modestly. Many wear their best clothes.
For non-Muslim visitors:
- Modest clothing is appreciated (covered shoulders and knees)
- Remove shoes before entering the prayer hall
- Women are welcome to bring a headscarf if they would like, though it is not expected
Why Jummah Matters in Warragul
Before Warragul Mosque opened, the Muslim community here had no local place for Friday prayer. People were driving more than an hour each way to Morwell or Cranbourne every week. For families with young children, shift workers, and the elderly, that was often not possible.
Since the mosque opened, over 200 worshippers now gather locally every Friday. For many families, this has made an enormous difference to how settled and at home they feel in Warragul.
