FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight, short answers to the questions we get most — about visiting, prayer, education, services, and donations.

Visiting the mosque

Can non-Muslims visit the mosque?

Yes — we welcome visitors of all faiths. The easiest way is to come to one of our interfaith coffee mornings or email to arrange a walkthrough. Modest dress appreciated; head covering for women is welcome but not required for a visit.

When is the mosque open?

The prayer hall opens for each of the five daily prayers. Public-facing hours (office, enquiries, classes) are Sunday 10am–2pm, Wednesday 7–9pm, and Friday 12:30–3pm. For any other time, please email or call ahead.

What should I wear?

Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Women are welcome to bring a scarf; we also have some at the entrance.

Is there parking?

Yes — on-street parking along Victoria Street and nearby. On Fridays and Eid, please allow extra time and follow the directions of our volunteer parking marshals.

Is the mosque wheelchair accessible?

Yes. The main entrance has a step-free access path, and we have accessible wudu and toilet facilities. If you need specific accommodations, please let us know in advance.

Prayer

When is Jumu'ah (Friday prayer)?

Every Friday at 1:30 PM. Khutbah is delivered primarily in English with Qur'anic recitation in Arabic. Doors open 1:00 PM.

Can I pray here daily?

Yes — all five daily prayers are held at the mosque. Prayer times follow Melbourne Muslim Times and are listed on our prayer times page.

Is there a separate women's prayer space?

Yes — a partitioned, carpeted women's space with its own entrance and wudu facilities.

Can I bring my children?

Absolutely. There's a children's corner near the women's section, and kids are part of the community — not a distraction from it.

Education & community

How do I enrol my child in Qur'an classes?

Classes run Sundays 10am–12pm for ages 5–12, in 4 school terms a year. Email info@binai.org.au to enrol.

Do you have classes for adults?

Yes — Wednesday adult Qur'an circle, Saturday sisters' circle, and term-based Arabic grammar. See the Education page.

I'm interested in Islam / I'm a new Muslim. What do I do?

Visit the New Muslims page or message us privately. You're welcome to come to Friday prayer, have a tea with us, and take things at your own pace. No pressure ever.

How do I become a member of BINAI?

Financial membership is $20/month and gives you voting rights at the AGM, free class enrolment, and member events. Sign up via the Contact page or ask at Jumu'ah.

Services

How do I book a nikah (Islamic marriage)?

Email the mosque at least 6 weeks before your preferred date. The Imam will meet with the couple for a pre-marital conversation and walk you through paperwork. See /nikah for full details.

I need a janazah (funeral) — what's the first step?

Call 0457 643 672 anytime, day or night. We guide the family through washing (ghusl), shrouding (kafan), janazah salah, and burial at the local Muslim plot. No family in Gippsland should do this alone.

Can I hire the mosque hall for a community event?

In limited cases — for community-focused, non-commercial events that align with our values. Email info@binai.org.au with details.

Donations

Is BINAI registered as a charity?

Yes — BawBaw Islamic Network Australia Inc. (BINAI) is a registered Australian charity with the ACNC. Donations of $2 or more are tax-deductible if marked to a DGR-endorsed fund (see the donate page for current status).

How much of my donation goes to the mosque?

Over 95% of donations go directly to the mosque's operating costs and capital projects. Administration is kept lean and reported at the AGM.

Can I pay zakat here?

Yes — you can direct your zakat to BINAI and specify it should be used for zakat-eligible purposes (e.g. supporting local families in need). Email if you want a zakat-specific receipt.

Do you accept cryptocurrency?

Not at this stage — card, PayID, direct deposit, and in-person cash/EFT only.
