Nikah

Islamic marriage at Warragul Mosque

Our Imam performs nikah ceremonies for couples in Gippsland, with pre-marital guidance, warm community, and clear paperwork.

How it works

Booking your nikah

  1. Get in touch early

Email or call the mosque at least 6 weeks before your preferred date so we can meet both parties, understand your story, and book the Imam.

  2. Pre-marital conversation

The Imam sits with the couple (and guardians where appropriate) to cover rights, expectations, and Islamic guidance for a healthy marriage.

  3. Paperwork

Australian law requires a civil marriage to be legally recognised. We work alongside an authorised civil celebrant, or a legally-registered imam if available.

  4. The ceremony

Nikah can be held in the mosque, a hall, or a family home. Two witnesses are required. Keep it simple — the Sunnah is barakah, not expense.

  5. Walima

A small Sunnah walima (wedding celebration) is encouraged. We can advise on local halal caterers and venues.

What you'll need

  • Two adult Muslim male witnesses (or equivalent per your madhhab)
  • Consent of the wali (bride's guardian) where applicable
  • Agreed mahr (dower) — no minimum, but document it
  • ID for both parties
  • Australian Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) lodged 1+ month prior

Our approach

We follow mainstream Sunni fiqh and respect different madhhabs among the community. Our focus is on a meaningful, simple, legally-sound ceremony that starts your marriage on the right foot. No judgement, no politics, no commercial upsell.

Pre-marital counselling

Before the nikah, the Imam meets with the couple to talk through communication, finance, conflict, in-law dynamics, and the rights both spouses have over each other in Islam.

Mixed-faith marriages

We speak openly with couples where one party is a Muslim revert or where a non-Muslim spouse is present. We'll advise on Islamic requirements and what's possible.
